Hanging Instructions.
Please don’t hang our wallpapers without first reading our instructions.

The wallpaper must be checked and any faults reported to Allyson McDermott Collections in the required timeframes, which are in our terms and conditions. info@allysonmcdermottcollections.com

We recommend that our wallpapers are hung by an experienced paperhanger, especially as the majority of our papers come untrimmed.

Surface Preparation.

  1. Please ensure all walls are clean, the surfaces are rubbed down, free of loose dirt, all previous paper removed.

  2. New plaster is sized to seal the surface, with diluted wallpaper adhesive, 50/50 with water.

  3. Sockets, light switches isolated by an electrician.

Wallpaper Hanging.

  1. All walls need to be lined with a heavyweight white lining paper, we recommend Wallrock by Ehrfurt, 180, which is acid free and has an alkaline buffer.

  2. The paper can be cross lined but this isn’t necessary as long as the joints don’t correspond with the wallpapers. There are several widths available. The paper needs to be butted together without any gaps.

  3. It is advisable to apply a thin, diluted adhesive coat to the lining paper and allow it to fully dry.

  4. The adhesive only needs to be applied to the walls, not the paper.

  5. We advise that no adhesive gets onto the surface of the wallpaper. If this occurs we recommend dabbing with

clean water and a clean damp sponge immediately.

  6. We recommend a pre-mixed tub paste, such as Cole & Son, ready mixed starch paste. Please test the adhesive

on a scrap of paper wallpaper first.

Wallpaper Trimming.

  1. Most wallpapers from Allyson McDermott Collections will in the majority need trimming before hanging. We allow an excess of 10 cm’s top and bottom and there is a 3cmm border on the sides to allow any inconsistencies in the wall. .

  2. Any designs that have been pre trimmed will be clearly indicated on their profile page.

Installation.

  1. All our Chinese wallpapers and panels come numbered, and should be hung in sequence, as per the plan in the case of bespoke designs.

  2. If the initial paper is hung along a plum line, pencil marks should be made carefully in order not to show through the paper.

  3. The design of the paper needs to be checked by the hanger in order to know where to start with regards to the height of the design.

  4. The room should be measured and the bottom of the panels checked to make sure the design does not drop around the room or the top pattern is hung too high.

  5. The wall needs to have a generous layer of adhesive, making sure that where the paper joins the adhesive is applied thinner.

  6. We advise that no adhesive gets onto the surface of the wallpaper. If this occurs in a small area we recommend gently dabbing with clean water and a clean damp sponge immediately. Do not wipe the surface.

Specialised paper handling.

Our paper is a superior quality paper and inks to give the high definition required in the design. All due care should be undertaken when handling and hanging our paper and should only be carried out by a specialised paper hanger.
The paper is easy to hang, but we advise, DO NOT get paste on the front of the paper. If there is a small mark, a spot, gently dab with a clean sponge, DO NOT wipe. This will reduce the mark, eliminate it completely in most cases but we obviously cannot guarantee, as we do not know the paste use or the instructions are carried through.

We take no responsibility for marking due to paste getting onto the surface of the paper. This is NOT a wipeable paper.

Protecting the paper.

Our wallpapers can have a protective coating applied to protect against some moisture ingress.

Wallpapers on paper can have protection applied on site. This should be carried out by a reputable decorator and after trials. This may be desirable when the seams between wallpaper and around the edges need protecting, or where the original protection specification is deemed to be insufficient.
Before additional protection is added the wallpaper must be thoroughly dry, which is ideally after fourteen days. Failure to do so can result in the additional glaze layers staying opaque rather than being transparent as they dry. The glaze can be applied with either a spray or a good quality brush following the manufacturer’s instructions.

Allyson McDermott Collections recommends the ‘Decorators Varnish’ range of glazes manufactured by Polyvine (www.polyvine.com) which are also available direct in the US (https://us.polyvine.com/index.php/en-us/varnishes-us-shop/water-based-varnishes/decorators-varnish-us-shop). The product comes in 3 finishes, dead flat with a matt finish or Satin and Gloss.

Touching up with Paint.

In the case of joint lines, nicks or the small gaps occurring due to the hanging, we recommend using watercolours to touch in. Obviously if you have not used them before, please test before touching the wallpaper or contact the studio for advice. This is only advisable if the paperhanger is proficient and has used watercolours previously. Other techniques can be used. (We do not take any responsibility for any paint applied to the surface of the paper)

Recommended paperhangers.

  1. In the Uk we can recommend several paperhangers who have previously worked with our papers, who have the highest standard of work.

  2. We do not take any responsibility or guarantee for the work of any paperhanger.

  3. The client must be satisfied with the standard of the paperhanger and their work prior to accepting them.
